History
The community center was originally Riverview School founded in 1924, and serving first grade through high school kids. The school was the central unifying facility in the community, located in the beautiful, western part of Ashe County.
As a part of the county’s effort to consolidate schools, Riverview School was closed in 1994. After the school’s closure, area community members led by Marilyn Bailey reestablished the school as a unifying force for the surrounding area through the its transformation into the Riverview Community Center (RCC).
Since then, the RCC has worked with volunteers in partnership with local government and businesses to maintain a public building for public use. The RCC Board and its members are committed to expanding the RCC programs and its role in our community by empowering people of all ages to be actively involved in the community through educational, recreational, social activities, and support services. If you can, please donate to RCC to help us continue to support our community.

The above pictures show the RCC school through the years. The existing buildings were built from 1953 through the mid 1980’s.
Gym renovation – During the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the gymnasium began to show its age. Beginning in 2020 with the aid of funds from the Ashe County Board of Commissioners, Blue Ridge Energy, and many volunteers, the gymnasium underwent a major renovation.
Unfortunately, in 2024, floodwaters from Hurricane Helene destroyed the flooring in the gym. Thanks to a major contribution from the Charlotte Hornets NBA team in partnership with Lowes, the gym has been rebuilt and is now the crown jewel of Riverview. The gym is available for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, ping pong, and just walking and socializing. Come and use the facility! You’ll feel like a pro!
