History
The community center was originally Riverview School founded in 1924, and serving first grade through high school kids. The school was the central unifying facility in the community, which is in the more remote, western part of Ashe County.
As a part of the county’s effort to consolidate schools, Riverview School was closed in 1994. After the school’s closure, area community members led by Marilyn Bailey reestablished the school as a unifying force for the surrounding area through the its transformation into the Riverview Community Center (RCC).
Since then, the RCC has done its best with limited resources to maintain a public building for public use. The RCC Board and its members are committed to expanding the RCC and its role in our community by empowering people of all ages to be actively involved in the community through educational, recreational, social activities, and support services.
Gym renovation – Beginning in 2020 with the aid of funds from the Ashe County Board of Commissioners, Blue Ridge Energy, and other community supporters. Led by a dedicated group of volunteers, the gymnasium was completely renovated and now provides a much needed resource on the western side of the county for people of all ages to connect, walk, play basketball, pickleball and ping-pong, and coach youth sports teams.
